Beads through Bags: I don't carry bags, I carry beads
In the past, "beads" were not just beads like they are nowadays. There used to be a history and a deep meaning behind them. Each bead also contains amazing artistic skills and interesting stories of what the people in the past actually use it for. One of the main reasons the ancient people value beads very much is because of their beliefs towards the spirits. They believe that beads could actually protect them from the existing unfriendly spirits. They always put their best efforts in creating every details of the beads. They craft them by hand, piece by piece. They always spent a lot of time creating beads for their loved ones. Back then, people wore beads everywhere they go.
This project aims to retain value of beads in modern life without losing the original function of beads by reinterpret those beads and come up with ways to convey messages from each beads. It needs to be able to tell the audience about its original functions, the long history behind, and the very unique crafts created and valued by the ancient people. According to the fact that people in ancient times believe that beads could give them protection as they wore them everyday. The medium that I chose as a tool to convey the messages is the bag. Today, bags became one of our most popular accessories. We use them as a decoration for our body. Also, we brought them with us everywhere we go. Bags can protect your stuffs and the things that you do care about. The way that we hang those bags on our body can reflect back on how ancient people wear beads too. |
